Geoana: I am getting closer to a decision on my comeback to Romanian politics

July 2, 2024

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said on Sunday in Botosani that he is "getting closer to making a decision" on his comeback to Romanian politics and maybe a candidacy for the Romanian Presidency. In Botosani to release the book "The battle for Romania's future. The thoughts of a Romanian at the top of NATO," Geoana was asked by the audience if he will run for president, and his answer was that he is getting closer and closer to making such a decision."I am getting closer and closer to a decision and I'm not hiding from you the fact that, by going to the country and talking to the Romanian diaspora so large and important, in a way I load myself with people's expectations, hopes and worries, but also I know well that I also have professional obligations at NATO and as long as I am at NATO I cannot make any announcement or take a decisive step. Because it would not be fair to the organisation I represent. My answer, which I hope will be an answer that will give you a bit of confidence, is that I am getting closer to the moment when I make a decision on my comeback to Romanian politics," said Geoana.   According to him, opinion polls "indicate the need for a deeper change in Romania."He reacted to a statement made two days ago by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who ironically said that "there is no point" in holding presidential elections as long as Mircea Geoana is placed first in the electorate's preferences."We are in another stage. I believe that Romanians need a different political project, done differently, and I believe that the polls so much invoked by some political leaders indicate the need for a deeper change in Romania," Geoana said.Mircea Geoana said that he had a long-standing relationship with the Social Democratic Party, which he had been a leader of, stressing that PSD voters and local Social Democratic elected representatives are "very important" to him."You can't claim anyone's vote. You have to earn it. We're talking about party support and such conversations... I think the most important thing is to enjoy people's trust. Obviously my relationship with the PSD is an old one. I enjoyed leading such an important party in Romania and obviously the voters, supporters and local elected members of the PSD, as well as other parties, are very important to me," said Mircea Geoana.
