Geoana: NATO Summit in Madrid has decided to continue to support Ukraine; their fight is our fight

July 21, 2022

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said in Constanta on Friday at the Black Sea Security Summit that NATO will continue to support Ukraine and that the Black Sea area remains a critical area of strategic relevance to NATO.He also said Russia is "the number one threat" at the time, adding that the rise of China is another important "challenge" to NATO's interests, values, and security. At the same time, Geoana thanked the US for the significant resources they provided to the Ukrainian army."We decided at the NATO Summit in Madrid to continue to support Ukraine. Their fight is our fight. We will continue to support Ukraine militarily, financially, in humanitarian ways, and let me thank the US Congress that in a bipartisan way has appropriated a significant amount of resources to the brave, heroic fight of the Ukrainian people and the army. We owe you a great deal of respect and gratitude. (...) This is a historic moment for our entire democratic world. I want to thank our American friends and allies for the impeccable, bipartisan support for our great alliance. This is the right way to conduct world affairs and to maintain and support our values of freedom, rule of law, and human dignity," said Geoana. The Black Sea Security Summit round table is organised by the US Congressional Committee on Security and Cooperation in Europe and is co-chaired by Romania's Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu and US Senator Roger Wicker. The event is organised for the first time in Romania and represents "the first multilateral dialogue in this formula among regional allies and partners on security in the Black Sea region," according to the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE).According to the congressional commission, "at this historic event on the shores of the Black Sea, members of the US Congress, senior-level government officials from the region, and key international partners will come together in a roundtable format to underscore the critical importance of the Black Sea region to European peace and security, and to establish a sustainable, collective approach to ending Russian aggression and enhancing mutual co-operation."
