Government debt falls to 49.7pct of GDP in June

The general government debt fell to 724.76 billion lei in June 2023, from 731.28 billion lei in the previous month, according to data the Finance Ministry (MF) released on Wednesday.As GDP percentage, government debt went down to 49.7% from 50.1% in May 2023.In June, medium- and long-term debt reduced to 695.23 billion lei from 697.84 billion lei in May 2023, while short-term debt fell to 29.53 billion lei from 33.44 billion lei in the previous month.Most of this debt, 605.9 billion lei, was represented by government securities. Loans amounted to 106.82 billion lei.Debt in euro amounted to 312.225 billion lei equivalent, debt in national currency to 337.154 billion lei, and debt in US dollars to 74.058 billion lei equivalent.Central government debt at the end of June 2023 was 706.03 billion lei, down from 712.51 billion lei in May, of which 676.53 billion lei was medium and long-term. Most of the central government debt was contracted in lei (322.53 billion lei) and in euro (308.117 billion lei equivalent).Local government debt decreased to 18.733 billion lei from 18.774 billion lei in May 2023, of which 18.7 billion lei medium and long-term.The general government domestic debt in June 2023 was 343.66 billion lei (23.6% of GDP), of which 329.67 billion lei was central government debt and 13.992 billion lei local government debt.According to MF data, the general government external debt was 381.098 billion lei (26.1% of GDP), of which 376.356 billion lei was central government external debt and 4.74 billion lei local government external debt.
