Operations at the Baia de Fier mine site in Gorj County?which includes two areas with certified graphite reserves at Catalinu and Ungurelasu?will resume, according to a decision approved by the Government on Friday.The Catalinu mine and the Ungurelasu quarry will be removed from the list of units for which permanent closure and environmental monitoring had previously been approved."The decision was made in anticipation of the launch of the strategic project titled 'Battery-Grade Graphite Extraction Project at Baia de Fier Site: Sustainable Development and Innovation for the Future of Energy of the European Union,' initiated by the National Salt Company SALROM SA. This is one of three Romanian projects included in the list of strategic projects adopted by the European Commission via Decision No. C(2025) 1904/25.03.2026, following the call for projects launched under the European Parliament and Council regulation establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials. The project entails developing the necessary extraction infrastructure and installing processing equipment to transform raw material into high-purity graphite?a material essential for battery production, particularly for electric vehicles and energy storage systems," stated a government press release.According to the Government, SALROM holds a concession license for the exploitation of graphitic shales in the Ungurelasu-Polovraci perimeter and has submitted the documentation demonstrating its technical and economic capacity to exploit the deposit."Resuming operations within the Ungurelasu-Polovraci area will contribute to regional development and the creation of new jobs. It also presents an opportunity to revitalize the non-energy mineral resources sector?an economic area of critical importance for achieving strategic economic goals and realizing the energy transition toward green technologies to combat the effects of climate change," the statement further explains.
