Gov't debt rises to 49.2% of GDP in April 2022

Romanian government's debt increased to 602.871 billion lei in April 2022 from 593.972 billion lei in March 2022, according to data with the Ministry of Finance (MF).Relative to GDP, the government debt rose to 49.2% from 48.4% at the end of March.Medium and long-term debt increased in April to 582.983 billion lei, while the short-term debt decreased to 19.888 billion lei.Most of the debt, or 498.646 billion lei, is in the form of government securities. Loans amounted to 94.522 billion lei.As much as 264.98 billion lei was government debt denominated in lei, 288.915 billion lei was government debt denominated in euros and 47.592 billion lei US dollar debt.At the end of April, the national government debt amounted to 585.44 billion lei, 565.566 billion lei of which in medium and long-term debt. Most of the debt was euro denominated (284.787 billion lei equivalent) and in lei (251.677 billion lei).At the end of April, the debt of the local public administration amounted to 17.431 billion lei, of which 17.417 billion lei in medium and long-term debt.According to the MF data, Romania's external debt was 307.088 billion lei (25% of GDP), of which 302.207 billion held by the central public administration and 4.881 billion lei by the local public administration.
