Greenpeace: 8.8 M cubic metres of wood disappear from Romania's forests every year

December 23, 2015

Romania's forests are being endangered by illegal clearing and faulty management and the studies show that 8.8 million cubic metres disappear every year, Greenpeace said in a release on Thursday."Forests are endangered by illegal clearing and the faulty management achieved in the absence of a national development strategy. Official studies showed that 8.8 million cubic metres of wood disappear from the forests every year and Greenpeace research revealed that only 0.5 million cubic metres is investigated by the authorities and that more than 360,000 hectares of forest have degraded between 2000 and 2014", the document says. Valentin Salageanu, the coordinator of the campaign for the protection of forests at Greenpeace Romania explained the figures prove that the faulty management and corruption affected the interests of the Romanian society. "This alarming data proves that faulty management and corruption have affected the interests of the entire Romanian society — on the one hand by failing to capitalise on the forest in an efficient and eco-friendly manner, while on the other destroying a priceless wildlife patrimony. We, therefore, continue to insist that the forests in Romania must be protected, managed in a sustainable manner, developed and perpetuated with a view to maintaining and improving the multiple services that they offer", Salageanu said. Greenpeace launched on Thursday its vision of the future of the Romanian forests, with the document to be put forward to the concerned authorities.
