The special parliamentary commission for the control of the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) activity had, in the first five weeks of mandate, a series of meetings and underwent control actions regarding the Russian interference on Romania, on the electoral processes, hostile actions of the Russian Federation against the Western. The chairman of the SIE Commission, the deputy Alexandru Muraru says that, as regards ‘the intentions of foreign interference” on the European and Romanian electoral processes confirms the existence of ‘concrete risks’ on the part of the Russian Federation. In this context, there were discussions about the prevention for counterattacking such threats, including the SIE collaboration with international partners for information exchanges. On the agenda of the last monitoring activity were the presentation of the risks and threats to Romania generated by Russian interference - methods, instruments, actors, with reference to the realities observed in the context of the elections in the Republic of Moldova; the analysis of the Russian Federation's intentions to interfere in the European space in the period 2024-2025, with a focus on the Romanian Europarliamentary and presidential elections; the developments of the conflict in Ukraine, the behaviour of the Russian Federation in the region and its hostile actions in the West, Romania ‘As regards the intentions of foreign interference on the European and Romanian electoral processes confirm the existence of concrete risks on the part of the Russian Federation, either by amplifying the tensions, cyber attacks or influence campaigns. Romania’s and the citizens’ protection from foreign threats, periodical information of the legal beneficiaries and foreign partners, relevant and rapid information collection, real time monitoring, support of the NATO allies and EU partners must stay objective and main pillars of the SIE activity’ stated the chairman of the SIE Commission, quoted by the press release. The Commission is concerned about the possibility of external interference, in particular from the Russian Federation, in the electoral process in Romania, and is taking this issue very seriously and including it as a priority for action in 2025.
