Representatives of the Romanian Society of Pneumology (SRP) drew an alarm signal on the occasion of the World COPD Day, about the impact of SRP, a disease affecting over 10% of adult world population and representing the third cause of death in the world. Specialists estimated that only half of COPD patients are diagnosed in Romania and many of them are seen by a pysician in advanced stages of the disease. According to Dr. Roxana Maria Nemes, former SRP president over 2020-2024, the early discovery of the disease could change destinies and could mean years of active life, independence and hope. At golbal level, over 600 million people will live with COPD by 2050, according to the GOLD 2025 Report. COPD is the third cause of death in the world, and 425 people are dying every hour on the hour because of COPD. Specialists say that a moderate exacerbation could increase the death rate by 17% and would double the risk of a heart attack in the first five days. So, over 20% of patients die in a year after being admitted to hospital for exacerbation. The estimated world cost of COPD between 2020 and 2050 is 4.3 trillion US dollars. Over 60% of Romanian patients with COPD spend at least 5 days in hospital annually, while in serious cases theyspend 8 days. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) for 2025 introduces new data about the connection between COPD and climate changes, about the role of microbial dysbiosis in the evolution of the disease and about new treatments which reduce the frequency of crises and improve the patients' quality of life. The report points out the fact that COPD is no longer the smokers' exclusive disease: air pollution, professional exposure and even childhood respiratory affections are major risk factors. Also, pulmonary rehabilitation, including online programs and long distance monitoring, play an imprtant role in disease control.
