Hidroelectrica will invest RON 296.8 million in a large-scale battery storage facility at the Iron Gates II hydropower plant, a 64 MW installation with 434.76 MWh of storage capacity, set to become the company's biggest storage project to date. The contract was awarded to Synergy Construct following the completion of the public procurement procedure. The company says the new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will strengthen operational flexibility across the National Power System by smoothing production over the full 24-hour cycle, shifting energy to higher-value intervals and improving the responsiveness of its portfolio. The project also benefits from RON 43.4 million in financing through the Modernisation Fund under the Energy Ministry's programme for developing battery-based storage capacities. The contractor will work with the following subcontractors/third parties - Kseo Enerji Anonim Sirketi, Professional Land Survey, Zoork, Tripol Sistem Construct, Inemko Insaat Elektrik Telekominikasyon Sanayi ve Ticaret Limited Sirketi, and Rogotehnic - after completion of all public-procurement procedural steps."For Hidroelectrica, the energy transition means more than developing new generation capacities. It means building the infrastructure that allows us to use renewable energy efficiently and respond flexibly to the needs of the National Power System. The BESS Iron Gates II project is a strategic step in this direction and confirms Hidroelectrica's commitment to investing in the technologies that will shape the energy of tomorrow," said Hidroelectrica CEO Iulius-Dan Plaveti.Hidroelectrica highlights that the winning bid significantly exceeded the tender's minimum requirement of 256 MWh, delivering 434.76 MWh - roughly 70% more - which the company sees as a key step in hybridising its generation mix. By storing energy and releasing it when system demand is highest, the new installation is expected to enhance both flexibility and long-term profitability.
