Swiss cement producer Holcim is preparing an investment of more than RON 3 million at its Valea Mare Pravat industrial site in Arges County, Romania, as part of a project aimed at incorporating construction and demolition waste into the cement manufacturing process. The company plans to invest approximately RON 3.1 million in a technological installation designed to store, dose and transport crushed concrete resulting from demolition works. The project is currently undergoing the environmental approval procedure with the Arges County Environmental Directorate. On September 3, 2026, the Arges County Environmental Directorate published Holcim Romania’s application for an environmental permit for the project entitled “CDM Injection into the Clinker Cooler.” According to documents submitted by the company and cited by local publication Evenimentul Muscelean, Holcim’s Campulung Cement Plant intends to introduce crushed demolition concrete, referred to as CDM, into the grate cooler. The planned system will have a processing capacity of approximately 10 tonnes per hour. The investment is expected to be carried out between September 2026 and April 2027 and is part of the plant’s ongoing modernization and efforts to improve the efficiency of its technological processes. The project is designed to recover materials generated by construction and demolition activities by incorporating them into cement production. The material will be introduced into the technological flow at the stage involving hot clinker produced by burning limestone meal in the kiln. The planned installation will include a metal storage hopper, a belt feeder equipped with weighing cells, chain and belt conveyors, an electromagnetic separator for removing ferrous materials, local dust-removal filters and gravity sealing flaps connecting the new system to the existing grate cooler. The technological equipment will be supported by independent metal structures or integrated into existing structures. The project also provides operating platforms, stairs and railings to facilitate access and equipment maintenance. Galvanized steel structures and maintenance platforms will be installed for the dust-removal equipment. The new structures will be designed to withstand the weight of the equipment, technological loads and climatic conditions. Metal components will receive appropriate anti-corrosion protection for the industrial operating environment. All interventions will be carried out within the existing industrial platform and designed to integrate the new equipment into the plant’s existing technological installations without affecting the facility’s overall operation. The project is intended to support the more efficient use of construction and demolition materials while further modernizing Holcim’s cement production operations in Romania.
