Foreign Minister Oana Toiu is promoting Romania's candidacy for a seat on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, at the 69th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, the Foreign Ministry (MAE) reported on Monday.Romania aims to continue promoting the use of atomic energy for peaceful, safe and responsible purposes, to contribute to the consolidation of the global nuclear non-proliferation and security regime and to support projects with medical use.These objectives were also expressed her speech at the plenary session of the General Conference.A final vote will take place on Thursday, a year and a half after the start of the candidacy process.During a meeting with the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, which was also attended by the Permanent Representative to the international organisations based in Vienna, Stelian Stoian, Toiu underlined Romania's concrete commitment in the civil nuclear sector, highlighting the strategic projects at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant - the refurbishment of Unit 1 and the establishment of Units 3 and 4, as well as the potential of SMR projects.Also discussed with the IAEA official were regional security affairs.Toiu voiced deep concern with the situation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is under the control of the Russian Federation, stressing that the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine is essential for the whole of Europe. The issue of Iran's nuclear programme was also addressed.The Romanian minister's agenda includes on Tuesday a meeting of the representatives of the Romanian Government from the IAEA delegation with Chris Wright, US Secretary of Energy, and an open dialogue event with the Romanian community in Vienna, on the sidelines of the conference.
