Infrastructure: Romania and Moldova agree cross-border rail co-operation

June 2, 2025

The national railways of Romania and Moldova have signed a memorandum of understanding for cross-border co-operation which includes reopening of the Falciu – Prut (Cantemir) railway, electrification of the Iasi – Chisinau line, modernisation of customs facilities at Ungheni and the resumption of Cahul – Galati passenger services, https://www.railwaygazette.com/ informs.   The international bridge over the River Prut at Falciu closed in 1992, but the Zorleni – Falciu – Moldovan border line on the Romanian side was reopened in March 2022 to support the transport of Ukrainian refugees. In January 2025 a ministerial meeting organised by the European Commission’s DG Move decided to completely rebuild the railway in the cross-border area.   Rehabilitation works are under way on the bridge, and on the Moldovan side CFM will rehabilitate the 1·8 km of line to Prut station by August this year.
