The national railways of Romania and Moldova have signed a memorandum of understanding for cross-border co-operation which includes reopening of the Falciu – Prut (Cantemir) railway, electrification of the Iasi – Chisinau line, modernisation of customs facilities at Ungheni and the resumption of Cahul – Galati passenger services, https://www.railwaygazette.com/ informs. The international bridge over the River Prut at Falciu closed in 1992, but the Zorleni – Falciu – Moldovan border line on the Romanian side was reopened in March 2022 to support the transport of Ukrainian refugees. In January 2025 a ministerial meeting organised by the European Commission’s DG Move decided to completely rebuild the railway in the cross-border area. Rehabilitation works are under way on the bridge, and on the Moldovan side CFM will rehabilitate the 1·8 km of line to Prut station by August this year. (Photo: Facebook CFR Infrastructura Iasi)
