Iohannis, at meeting with Macron, reiterates Romania’s desire to plug into EU’s strong core

November 28, 2018

President Iohannis met on Tuesday at Elysee Palace with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, context in which he reiterated Romania’s wish to plug into the European Union’s strong core. According to a press release from the Presidential Administration, the two presidents discussed the bilateral relationship between Romania and France, the European agenda, in the context of the preparations for the taking over by Romania of the presidency of the Council of the European Union, and also the international and security agenda. At the meeting, the president emphasized the great significance of the meeting with his French counterpart, both for Romania and for the bilateral relationship, 2018 being the year when the Romanians celebrate the Greater Union Centennial, a founding moment in the national history celebrated by the organization, alongside France, of the Franco-Romanian Season, respectively by marking the 10th anniversary since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The two presidents appreciated the very good cooperation in various fields, including the economic one, with the Romanian president appreciating the results in terms of trade, with exchanges of over 8 billion euro last year. President Iohannis encouraged more French investment in our country and better capitalizing on the potential for increased trade. Another topic of discussion was cooperation in defense, industry, education and science, the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project being brought to mind, as well as the need to boost it on certain segments. The two presidents also tackled issues such as the development of defense at European Union level, to which both countries attach great importance, as well as the high-stakes migration file at European level, with President Klaus Iohannis showing that during the presidency of the EU Council, Romania will openly get involved in stimulating the search for acceptable solutions for the member states. Aspects related to the consolidation of the European single market in the current international context were also discussed, as well as Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, which remains a priority for our country. As regards the regional agenda, President Iohannis emphasized the importance Romania attaches to the Eastern Neighborhood and the European path of the Republic of Moldova. In this regard, Iohannis highlighted the need to maintain the commitment of the Union and the member states in furthering the boosting of the reform process in a European spirit. “The President of Romania also underlined the loyalty our country has towards the enlargement policy and to the European perspective of the Western Balkans in the context of the presidency of the EU Council to be exercised by Romania,” the Presidential Administration mentions. President Klaus Iohannis also approached the process of our country’s accession to the OECD, France’s support to that goal having been reiterated.
