Iohannis: Drug use in Romania will be included on the agenda of the next CSAT

October 10, 2023

Drug use among in Romania's young people is an alarming phenomenon, President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday, adding that the subject will be included on the agenda of the next meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT).     The CSAT is the body that gives direction to the institutions of force in combating phenomena that endanger national security. Once an issue is put on the CSAT agenda and there is a CSAT decision to combat that phenomenon, all the institutions of force are obliged to get moving."I want to mention now an alarming phenomenon, that of drug use in young people. It is a problem that concerns our society increasingly more, and I am glad that there is an increased interest in trying to find solutions to combat the scourge. I have decided to include this subject on the agenda of the next meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence. The effects, the extent, the societal challenges of drug use, especially from a young age and in schools, are a serious challenge against individuals and national security," Iohannis told an opening of the school year ceremony at Secondary School No. 162 in Bucharest. He emphasised the importance of preventive and responsible behaviour."It is crucial that the younger generations understand from an early age the dangers and dramatic consequences of drug, alcohol and tobacco use," said Iohannis. He added that through education and awareness it is possible to "build a solid barrier against these threats." He also pointed out that it is vital to implement healthcare education programmes in schools to provide students with all the necessary information and tools to make sound choices on their own. Also attending the school year opening ceremony were Education Minister Ligia Deca and Bucharest District 1 Mayor Clotilde Armand.
