Iohannis în Budapest: We're open to support Hungarian investments in Romania, as we encourage Romanian companies to further invest in Hungary

November 9, 2023

President Klaus Iohannis declared, on Wednesday, in Budapest, that we are open to supporting Hungarian investments throughout the territory of our country and Romanian companies will be encouraged to continue investing in Hungary."Today we also discussed the opportunities to develop our economic and sectoral cooperation, to develop the infrastructure and ensure energy security. We emphasized that, in the Romanian side's view, economic cooperation must be structured through projects of common interest, non-discriminatory, based on criteria of ethnicity, which should not be limited only to certain parts of Romania and which must be financed in compliance with Romanian European legislation, as well as with the agreement of the Romanian side. We are open to supporting Hungarian investments throughout the territory of our country and we will encourage Romanian companies to continue investing in Hungary," Iohannis said, in a joint press conference held together with his Hungarian counterpart, Novak. At the same time, during the talks between the two presidents, the regional, European and global situation, deeply affected by the war started by Russia against Ukraine, was addressed. In this context, Iohannis reaffirmed that Romania's consistent support for Ukraine will continue as long as it is needed."Regarding the security situation at the Black Sea, I reiterated that the quick reaction of NATO and its allies to the recent incidents with drones, which affected the territory of Romania as well, by strengthening monitoring and surveillance capabilities, was exemplary and we continue the steps for deploying allied support equipment. We also discussed Sweden's accession to NATO, which is necessary for the consolidation of the Alliance," the Romanian president also declared. He also said , that during discussions with his Hungarian counterpart, Novak Katalin, he expressed the full readiness of the Romanian authorities to act to strengthen dialogue and bilateral cooperation, saying that "it is absolutely necessary to avoid unilateral or controversial gestures"."My visit today to Budapest, at the invitation of president Novak Katalin constitutes an important signal regarding the future development of our bilateral relationship. (...) I expressed the full readiness of the Romanian authorities to act for the consolidation of dialogue and bilateral cooperation and to offer even more substance to the strategic partnership between our countries. Romania aims for this dialogue to have a positive dynamic, of development and deepening, in the interest of all our citizens, regardless of their ethnic origin. Romania promotes an open, transparent, pragmatic approach, based on mutual trust. I strongly believe that it is absolutely necessary to avoid unilateral or controversial gestures," Iohannis said in the joint press statement with Novak. In this context, the Romanian president pointed out that people who belong to national minorities contribute to creating and consolidating bridges between the state of citizenship and the related state."There must be a decision on both sides to look at the future of our relations in a perspective focused on development, cooperation, identifying the elements that unite us and similar interests, rather than those that divide them. I emphasized that people belonging to national minorities contribute to the creation and consolidation of bridges between the state of citizenship, the only one responsible for the protection of their rights, and the related state," said Klaus Iohannis.
