Iohannis, on interference in electoral process: Romania had enormous problem and coped with it

January 16, 2025

The head of state is participating in the EU - Western Balkans Summit and the European Council in Brussels. Iohannis had a first meeting with the new president of the European Council, António Costa, with whom he discussed "the importance of resilience and a strategic orientation, to be able to manage all the challenges".   Romania had an enormous problem and coped with it, President Klaus Iohannis declared on Wednesday, regarding foreign interference in the electoral process. He argued that an integrated approach and finding tools and solutions are needed, because that is what the people expect from the EU leadership and from national leaderships."Romania had an enormous problem and coped with it. Romania's reaction was strong, immediate", said the head of state.Iohannis reiterated that Romania is stable and spoke about "the hard lesson we received in the last weeks". At the same time, the head of state pointed out, efforts are needed to combat Russia's "malignant" interference, "to reduce our exposure to these treacherous attacks"."This is not a threat only to Romania, but to democracies," he added, regarding foreign interference in the electoral process, calling for coordination.    According to him, the presidential elections should be organized "fairly quickly"."I believe they should be organised fairly quickly. I don't think a delay would help anything. On the other hand, I didn't expect, nor did it happen for the outgoing government to clarify this issue. I hope that the new Government will be formed as soon as possible and that it will tackle this issue promptly," said the president, in Brussels, to attend the European Council meeting on Thursday.
