JusMin Toader, Commissioner Vera Jourova discuss developments in Romania’s judiciary. European Commissioner for Justice meets President Iohannis, discusses Presidency of Council of EU, EP elections, EU budget

Justice Minister Tudorel Toader discussed on Tuesday with Vera Jourova, European Commissioner for Justice, on the developments in the judiciary in Romania and the priorities for the justice field in the context of the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Justice Ministry informs. According to a press release issued by the Justice Ministry, Justice Minister Tudorel Toader had a working meeting with Vera Jourova, European Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Protection and Gender Equality, also attended by a technical delegation from the Justice Ministry, one from the European Commission and other of the European Commission Representation in Romania. “The topics discussed during the meeting focused on issues related to the priorities in the field of justice in the context of the forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the developments of the judiciary system in Romania,” the release mentions. The quoted source informs that the visit is part of the current diplomatic practice of the bilateral meetings of the European Commissioners with their counterparts from the governments of the member states that are to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. These visits take place shortly before taking over the presidency and are aimed at an exchange of views on the priorities and the role of the new EU Council Presidency. “Tudorel Toader gave assurances regarding the support of the Bucharest authorities for the initiatives promoted by the European Commission, while Vera Jourova reiterated the openness of the Commission for dialogue and support for the duration of Romania’s exercising the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union,” the Justice Ministry informs. The two officials agreed that through dialogue and cooperation, both sides will be able to fulfill their mission.   President Iohannis, European Commissioner for Justice discuss Presidency of Council of EU, EP elections, EU budget   President Klaus Iohannis met on Tuesday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova, whom he discussed with about aspects related to the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, May elections for the European Parliament and the future budget of the European Union post-2020.   The head of state presented the main files and challenges to be dealt with by our country during the time when it will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU. “President Klaus Iohannis highlighted the fact that the programme of the Romanian Presidency will focus mainly on how to advance the legislative and non-legislative files that could lead to concrete results for the European citizens,” reads the release. The head of state reiterated that our country, while holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, wants to help ensuring an adequate convergence level among the member states and strengthen cohesion at the entire community level. In this context, President Klaus Iohannis underscored the importance of maintaining adequate allowances for the cohesion policy in the future EU budget, in order to reduce economic gaps and increase convergence between the member states. The Presidential Administration informed that during the talks about the future European Parliament elections, the two officials pleaded for a free and fair electoral process. The European Commissioner underscored the importance of combating disinformation, as well as increasing investments in cyber security, shows the same source.
