Liberals to decide on Monday on tentative partnership with either USR or PSD

December 6, 2021

The National Liberal Party's Political Bureau will meet on Monday to decide on the negotiations with the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Liberal leader Florin Citu announced on Friday."As you know, and as we set off with our mandate, I sat down with representatives of the two parties, I will present to the party the conclusions of both round of talks and the decision will be for the National Liberal Party (PNL) to take, not for the PNL Chairman," Citu said.He termed the discussion with PSD as "good"."Now we cannot iron it all out overnight and say that everything is rosy between PNL and PSD, but what I can say is that we are responsible. We have set out on this path to put together a government. We are looking at the best solution for PNL and for Romania and we must find a formula to govern Romania in the next period, but, I repeat, the decision for PNL will be taken within the party," Citu said.According to him, a proposal put forward at the meeting with PSD was that of a rotation Prime Minister, but there was almost no discussion about portfolios or who would hold the Prime Minister office."It's a variant on the table, but we can each go to his party to see if the party accepts it," the PNL leader explained. As regards a possible PSD - PNL government formula for a seven-year period, he said: "Let's take a step and devise a government first and we can talk about seven years later.""Let's see what formula we agree upon. At this moment, the mandate I and the negotiating team had is to discuss with both USR and PSD. We take the conclusions of both rounds of talks to the party," Citu said when asked if PNL is willing to give up the position of Prime Minister even for a period of two years. He also said the dialogue with USR will be maintained. "I didn't understand, and I am a little disappointed here, we had a good discussion with USR, but I saw a public statement by Mr. Ciolos which again casts a shadow on the authority of the PNL Chairman. It's complicated to negotiate with someone who says that the idea of the PNL Chairman taking over as Prime Minister is a joke, but we keep the dialogue open and discuss," Citu explained.
