German supermarket chain Lidl has generated a total socio-economic impact of €19.2 billion in Romania since entering the local market, including direct, indirect and induced effects, as well as its fiscal and social contribution, according to the latest socio-economic impact analysis conducted by KPMG. The figure is equivalent to approximately 67% of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) funding initially allocated to Romania. The analysis covers the period 2011–2025 and was released as Lidl marks 15 years of operations in Romania. During the period analyzed, Lidl companies in Romania: generated a total gross value added of €16.1 billion, with more than 70% representing indirect and induced effects across the economy; increased their annual contribution to gross value added 17-fold, reaching more than €2.5 billion in 2025; made direct investments of more than €2.7 billion, equivalent to 3.7% of total foreign direct investment in Romania during the period analyzed; contributed €3.9 billion to the state budget through corporate income tax, taxes, excise duties and other payments; worked with more than 3,300 Romanian suppliers, with company spending on these suppliers reaching €16.4 billion over the 15 years; generated an employment impact equivalent to supporting more than 679,000 full-time jobs for one year; directed €48.1 million to local communities through donations. Lidl’s economic impact has multiplied alongside the company’s expansion in the Romanian market. A significant part of this impact comes from its cooperation with local businesses. Over the past 15 years, Lidl has worked with more than 3,300 suppliers in Romania, while the value of goods purchased from them reached €16.4 billion. This translates into an average of more than €1 billion per year directed to Romanian suppliers. “Over the 15 years of our presence in the local market, we have demonstrated that Lidl is both a strong retail player and a pillar of the Romanian economy. Lidl’s true strategic strength lies in the multiplier effect: we transform every euro generated internally into €3.33 injected into the national economy — through jobs, contributions to the state budget, strong long-term partnerships with Romanian producers and our social impact in the communities of which we are part,” said Alberto Chueca, CEO of Lidl Romania. “We see these 15 years not simply as a balance sheet, but as proof of strength and a benchmark for the next stage. We will continue to invest in Romania and stimulate the country’s economic growth,” he added. In 2025, the retailer reported consolidated revenue of more than RON 27.3 billion, up by more than 10% from the previous year. This made Lidl the largest player in Romania’s food retail market and the country’s third-largest company by revenue. The KPMG analysis shows that Lidl’s contribution extends beyond its direct operations, with its activities generating significant knock-on effects throughout the Romanian economy through suppliers, employment, investment, taxation and household spending. The figures are part of the 2011–2025 socio-economic impact assessment of Lidl’s activity in Romania, conducted by KPMG to mark the retailer’s 15th anniversary on the local market.
