MAE sets up crisis cell on the situation in the Middle East

May 14, 2024

A crisis cell was established at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) for the situation in the Middle East, according to Digi24 sources. The crisis cell formed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) was convened on Saturday, after the attacks on Israel.   From Saturday until now, MAE has not received requests for consular support and there is no question of evacuations while the airspace is open.   Romanian officials, President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Senate President Nicolae Ciuca condemned Iran’s attack on Israel and appealed to avoid an expansion of the war at the regional level.   So far, the MAE and the Ministry of Defense have informed the prime minister about developments in the region and monitored the situation in the East.   The discussions also take place in the context in which Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has scheduled an official visit to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates from Tuesday.   “Romania condemned at the highest level the attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the State of Israel and we reiterate the need to avoid escalation. We express our deep concern about the security situation in the Middle East. Through our missions in the region, we monitor the situation and are in contact with the Romanian citizens”, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radu Mihail Filip said.   The Romanian Foreign Ministry has already sent a warning to Romanian citizens to avoid any trip to the State of Israel, Palestine, the Lebanese Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran.   The MAE recommends that Romanian citizens who are in the territories of these states exercise caution, get information from official sources about security developments and strictly comply with any recommendations or instructions of the local authorities. Details of travel warnings for these states are available on the ministry’s website.
