MAE: starting 1st October, the Romanian non-resident citizens can enter the United Kingdom exclusively on the basis of a valid electronic or temporary passport

October 25, 2021

As a continuation of the information sent referring to the regime for enter and stay in the United Kingdom in the context of Brexit, the ministry of foreign affairs reminds the citizens that starting 1st October 2021, the European citizens (who are not in EU Settlement Scheme) can enter the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland with a valid passport (electronic or temporary). Thus, starting with this date, the Romanian non-resident citizens cannot enter the United Kingdom on the basis of an identity card.   According to the information provided by the British authorities, the European citizens (including Romanian citizens), non-resident in the United Kingdom who do not observe the new rules have no access to the British territory, shows a Minister of Foreign Affairs(MAE) press release.   The European citizens (including Romanian citizens) who are included in the EU Settlement Scheme can travel to the UK by using a valid national identity card until 31st December 2025 (on condition it is registered as travel document on the personal account UK Visas and Immigration – UKVI – created for registration with EUSS).   MAE uses this opportunity to remind the fact that, starting with 1st January 2021, non-resident Romanian citizens can travel to/transit the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland for tourism/visit, short stay, for a period of up to six months in a year, without visa. (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/). Even so, the Romanian citizens who want to work during the six months have to obtain, previously, an entry visa.
