Military mobility corridor between Romania, Bulgaria and Greece - optimization of transport corridors, supply routes

August 8, 2024

The Minister of National Defence, Angel Tilvar, signed on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the Washington Summit, the Letter of Intent for the creation of a military mobility corridor between Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, the Defence Ministry (MapN) informs.According to the same source, "this initiative marks significant progress in strengthening NATO's defence and deterrence capabilities in the region."The project aims to optimize transport corridors to meet military mobility requirements, by creating supply routes (road and rail) between the participating states, reducing bureaucracy in peacetime and maximizing efficiency in emergency and crisis situations, taking into account the NATO and national initiatives. The Letter of Intent signed by Greece, Bulgaria and Romania closely aligns with NATO's priorities of ensuring collective defense, improving rapid reaction capabilities and increasing interoperability between member nations, contributing to a fair distribution of responsibilities between allies."The close collaboration with Bulgaria and Greece will allow us to respond more effectively to current and future security challenges. We will continue the discussions and remain open to other similar initiatives, which will lead to the strengthening of Romania's role within the North Atlantic Alliance", the Romanian minister of Defence emphasized, according to a MapN press release. The project will benefit from existing initiatives at the level of the European Union, aiming at a coordinated approach between NATO and the EU in the field of military mobility. The implementation of the project at the national level will require concerted efforts between various institutions, involving the entire governmental spectrum. In the context of the NATO Summit in Vilnius in 2023, it was agreed on the need to strengthen the deterrence and defense posture of the Alliance by adopting new defense plans and accelerating military adaptation. This adaptation includes the ability to supplement forces and equipment and to ensure logistical support, by facilitating the cross-border transit of forces and capabilities, even in peacetime, MApN explained.
