Minister Delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu resigns two months before presidency of the Council of the EU . Reactions. Negrescu comes up with clarifications : Process of preparing Romania’s presidency of the Council of the EU is on schedule. I’d voluntarily work for Romania on such an important project if this was wanted

November 12, 2018

Minister Delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu resigned on Friday. The information appeared via governmental sources and was subsequently confirmed on Saturday by European Funds Minister Rovana Plumb. “From what I understand, this resignation has taken place. During the Government meeting yesterday, I talked with Mr Negrescu, there were principled discussions about the manner in which we are ready for the presidency of the Council of the EU,” Rovana Plumb said. The discussion that took place during the Government meeting was evoked by Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici too. “Yesterday [Friday], at the end of the Government meeting, there was a discussion regarding the final stages, the measures that must be taken for us to be entirely ready for next year’s presidency. An open discussion, naturally, as it should be in a team, concerning Mr Negrescu’s participation in maybe a higher number of such meetings alongside the ministers of Finance and European Grants, as is normal, because this is the structure, that’s how the discussions are. “That was the discussion. Unfortunately, I see Mr Negrescu took it personally, and is proving that he doesn’t understand what a team means, working as a team, especially when we’re talking about next year’s presidency. There were discussions before too and it’s normal for discussions to take place. This discussion took place and I saw on the news that he resigned, and I’m really surprised because its role was to prove he is a mediator and the atmosphere is ‘I’m upset, I pick up my toys and leave.’ “Nevertheless, it’s a gesture that, on the threshold of the presidency and especially on the threshold of certain actions next week – there were some meetings at Strasbourg, Brussels, at the level of ministers, and now that’s that,” Teodorovici stated for Antena3.   Reactions   Opposition’s reaction to the resignation of minister handling the preparations for the taking over of the rotational presidency of the Council of the EU: The recipe for disaster is now complete   Save Romania Union (USR) Cristian Ghinea stated on Saturday, following Minister Delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu’s resignation, that “the recipe for disaster is now complete.” “Victor Negrescu, the one responsible with preparing the taking over of the presidency of the Council of the EU, has suddenly resigned today. There are only two months left before the taking over of the presidency. Rovana Plumb assures us that everything is well prepared and that, at any rate, Viorica Dancila is making sure everything will go well. The recipe for disaster is now complete,” Cristian Ghinea wrote on Facebook.   Ponta: Victor Negrescu is one of the few ministers actually well-trained for his office   Ex-Premier Victor Ponta claims that Victor Negrescu is one of the few current ministers actually well-trained for his office, having good connections at European level and being one of the last true Social Democrats within PSD’s current leadership. “The gravest thing is that Victor Negrescu is the minister who worked on preparing Romania to take over the six-month presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st – what message do we convey to Brussels through his resignation? And on Tuesday the European Parliament will approve an extremely negative resolution on Romania – followed by the European Commission Report on the CVM (just as negative)!”, Victor Ponta wrote on his Facebook page. In his opinion, “it seems someone actually plans to drive us out of the European Union.”   Tomac: Minister Negrescu’s resignation proves that Dancila Gov’t is not ready to take over the rotational presidency of the EU. Mr Orban, Mr Barna, let’s table the no-confidence motion already!   Popular Movement Party (PMP) Eugen Tomac states that Minister Negrescu’s resignation proves that the Dancila Government is not ready to take over the rotational presidency of the EU, and asks PNL and USR to join the PMP in tabling the no-confidence motion. “The 2019 minister has resigned. President Orban, President Barna, the minister responsible with preparing the Presidency of the Council of the European Union that starts on January 1st has resigned. Minister Negrescu’s resignation proves that the Dancila Government is not ready to take over the rotational Presidency of the EU. Let’s table the no-confidence motion already! If not now, then when and over what?”, Eugen Tomac wrote on his Facebook page.   Victor Negrescu comes up with clarifications : Process of preparing Romania’s presidency of the Council of the EU is on schedule. I’d voluntarily work for Romania on such an important project if this was wanted   Victor Negrescu, the Minister Delegate for European Affairs who tendered his resignation on Friday, made several statements on Sunday, while waiting for the discussions within the party, stating that the process of preparing Romania’s presidency of the Council of the EU is on schedule and he would voluntarily work for Romania on such an important project if that was wanted. “While waiting for the talks within the party, I hereby point out the three objectives I proposed at the start of my mandate as Minister Delegate for European Affairs: political and national consensus on European Affairs and on the mandate of Romania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union (objective attained through the unanimous approval of our priorities within the Romanian Parliament’s relevant committees, but also through the approval of the strategic orientation document at the level of Government, with 25 endorsements. More precisely, teamwork and good collaboration with everyone.); democratising and transparentising access to European information (objective attained via the public consultations on the future of the EU held across the country. More precisely, everything was transparent and the talks with the people were essential.); a new attitude in the field of European affairs (objective attained by creating the Romania-Germany-France trio and taking over the Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. More precisely, the country’s prestige was defended where I was able to contribute.),” Victor Negrescu wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday. He says that the most important thing is...
