Minister Pislaru: Deadline for special pensions overhaul - Nov 28

August 28, 2025

The deadline Romania has pledged for overhauling the special pensions system - as provided for in the NRRP, is November 28 this year, Minister of European Investments and Projects Dragos Pislaru declared at a press conference on Thursday. He added that the governing coalition is further having discussions on the reform of special pensions, and when a final decision is reached and a legislative initiative is hammered out, the authorities will definitely seek the Commission's agreement on the subject. "At this point, I believe that we have detailed information, a proposal by the prime minister which, of course, will also be referred for consultations to the European Commission", specified Pislaru.Asked about the details of the consultations Pislaru said that "(...) what the European Commission brings to the table are some elements of principle. The moment Romania owns up to the existence of these major inequities and comes up with a viable solution to address those inequities, the European Commission doesn't dwell on, let's say, the details component. So, from my point of view, the proposal made by the prime minister is a more than balanced proposal, it is a fair proposal and reflects Romania's determination to carry through these reforms," Pislaru declared.
