Interim National Defence Minister Radu Miruta announced that he talked on Friday morning with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, to whom he argued the need to strengthen the allied defence in the Dobrogea region until the anti-drone capabilities ordered by the National Defence Ministry (MApN) are delivered."The war at Romania's borders is a reality. So is our responsibility to take rational decisions based on facts, not emotion or speculation. Following last night's incident, I immediately informed the President of Romania and our NATO allies. I had a telephone conversation this morning with Mark Rutte, the NATO Secretary General, to whom I once again argued how important it is that what we have formally requested at allied level is implemented in the Dobrogea region until the anti-drone capabilities recently ordered by the Ministry of Defence are delivered," Radu Miruta wrote on his Facebook page. The interim Defence Minister underscored that more ground-based air defence systems are needed, "which we do not have.""Yes, it was a Geran-2 drone. Yes, it was detected and tracked on the newly installed radar in the Galati area after the incident two weeks ago. Yes, fighter jets were authorised to fire. Yes, during the four minutes it was in the Romanian airspace it could not be engaged without the projectile causing greater damage in the city of Galati or without the projectile leaving Romania and being considered an interference in the war in Ukraine. Yes, we need more ground-based air defence systems, which we do not have because, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, those who had the decision did not take it. For five months, since I have been minister, equipping the Army has been my number one priority and compared with the situation before, we now have for the first time eight anti-drone air defence systems under the SAFE [Security Action for Europe]. We are in constant contact and are already working on additional measures to strengthen security on the Eastern Flank. Some of these measures will be announced in the coming hours," Radu Miruta also wrote.
