The spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), US Colonel Martin O’Donnell, said that the drone shot down in Romanian airspace during the night between Saturday and Sunday appears to be Russian, according to Reuters. 'Further details regarding Sunday’s incident are still under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian,’ he said. The NATO official also stated that the alliance remains on constant alert and ready to defend itself against any threat.Reuters notes that the drone which illegally entered Romanian airspace and was shot down by Spanish F-18 fighter jets on a NATO air policing mission is the fourth unmanned aircraft to be shot down over the country this year. ‘Last night, another drone entered national airspace without authorisation and was shot down. At 04:44, the target was detected entering national airspace, 24 km north of Gala?i, at which point two Spanish F-18 fighter jets, which had already been scrambled as a precaution, were authorised to engage. At 05:01, the drone was intercepted and destroyed between the towns of B?leni and Cudalbi, in Gala?i County, in an unpopulated area,’ announced the Minister of National Defence, Radu Miru??, in a Facebook post.
