NATO's Geoana: No indications that Russia has any intention of attacking a NATO state

October 10, 2023

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana says that there are no indications of the Russian Federation having an intention of attacking a NATO member state, but that the worries of the Romanians living near the Danube border with Ukraine are understandable."There are no indications that the Russian Federation has any intention of attacking a NATO member state, be it Romania or any other state. And that is a result of the power and strength of our alliance. We are the first element of deterrence (... ).Obviously, when a few hundred metres or a few kilometres away from your home, from your workplace you hear the noise of war, obviously it creates excitement for you and obviously it creates anxiety and anguish. I understand that. But there is no risk against Romania in the sense of being dragged into this conflict or the conflict having an extension towards Romania," Geoana said on Monday in the town of Racari, Dambovita County. The NATO official also announced his intention to visit the areas in Tulcea County in the vicinity of the Ukrainian ports constantly attacked by drones of the Russian Federation."What would have happened had we not been in NATO? And maybe this would be additional confidence in the fact that we belong to the strongest alliance in the history of humankind. And I even intend to visit soon and (...) maybe my presence and my message will be a message of peace, trust and calm," said Geoana.About parts of drones found in the northern part of Tulcea County, Geoana said that there are no indications of an intention of striking Romania."Obviously there is an ongoing investigation carried out by Romania. We are in direct contact at the political and military level with the Romanian ally and I am convinced that everything will be elucidated and will be presented to the pubic in a transparent manner in the future. So, first of all, it is not a deliberate attack. My message, as a Romanian, is to try and have confidence in the fact that NATO has all the measures taken to ensures the protection of its entire space, including Romania, now and in the future," said Geoana. He welcomed, in the context, the US decision to add air policing for the Black Sea area."So we will have - in addition to 5,000 NATO soldiers who are today on our soil - additional components , and that should reassure us and give us a lot of confidence. At the same time, in Vilnius, our leaders adopted a new generation of defence plans, precisely for this type of incidents, accidents or more serious situations, or possible deliberate attacks. Therefore, the defence plans are much more complete, starting with air policing, a much more integrated anti-missile system; we are talking about measures specific to the Black Sea, which is, in itself, an area of importance to us and very complex."
