Natural increase of population remains negative in March

The natural increase of the Romanian population continued to be negative in March 2025, with a minus of 11,150 people, an increase compared to March 2024, when the negative increase was 8,982 people, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).According to official statistics, in the reference period, the number of birth certificates for live births decreased by 0.5%, while the number of death certificates increased by 10.9%, and that for children under one year of age who died was 16 higher.In March 2025, 10,560 people died in urban areas (5,390 men and 5,170 women), and 11,010 people died in rural areas (5,669 men and 5,341 women). The number of death certificates registered was 21,570, an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous month (+4.2% men and +4.8% women).According to the same source, compared to the same month in 2024, the number of registered deaths increased by 9.5% in urban areas (+7.6% for men and +11.4% for women) and by 12.3% in rural areas (+9.7% for men and +15.3% for women).INS data also reveal that, at a comparative level between March and February 2025, birth certificates for 10,420 children were recorded, an increase of 334 (+3.3%). At the same time, the number of death certificates registered for children under one year of age was 83, in the analyzed interval, an increase of 20.In March this year, 42% of the total number of deaths was recorded in people aged 80 and over, 27.4% in those aged 70-79, and 17% in people aged 60-69. At the opposite pole, the fewest deaths were registered in the age groups 0-4 years (98), 5-19 years (49) and 20-29 years (78).In terms of marriage and divorce, in March 2025, 4,441 marriages were recorded at civil status offices, while the number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the agreement of the spouses (administratively or through notarial procedure) was 1,652.
