Natural increase remains negative, number of deaths 1.7 times higher than live births, in May

Natural growth remained negative in May 2025, with the number of live births continuing to be lower than that of deaths, according to data published on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).Thus, the number of births decreased compared to May 2024, but increased compared to the previous month (April 2025), and the number of registered deaths decreased both compared to May 2024 and the previous month, respectively April 2025.According to INS figures, birth certificates for 10,881 children were registered in May, an increase of 419 (+4%) compared to April. The number of death certificates registered in May 2025 was 18,781 (9,816 for males and 8,965 for females), 746 fewer deaths than in April 2025, which represents a decrease of 3.8% (-2.8% males and -4.9% females).The number of death certificates registered for children under 1 year of age in May 2025 was 71, an increase of 10 compared to April 2025.Under these conditions, the natural increase remained negative (-7,900) in May 2025, the number of registered deaths being 1.7 times higher than that of live births.In May of this year, 41.8% (7,851 deaths) of the total number of deaths were recorded in people aged 80 and over, 27% (5,073 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 16.8%, representing 3,161 deaths, in people aged 60 - 69. At the opposite pole, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (81 deaths), 5-19 years (43 deaths) and 20-29 years (69 deaths).In May 2025, 10,285 marriages were registered at civil registry offices.The number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the spouses' agreement (administratively or through notarial procedure) was 1,426.In May 2025, compared to May 2024, the number of birth certificates for live births was 1,336 lower (-10.9%). The number of death certificates registered in May 2025 decreased by 573 (-3%) compared to May 2024, and that for children under one year of age who died was 7 lower.Natural growth was negative both in May 2025 (-7,900 people) and in May 2024 (-7,137 people).In May 2025, 9,330 people died in urban areas (4,875 males and 4,455 females), and 9,451 people died in rural areas (4,941 males and 4,510 females). Compared to the same month in 2024, the number of deaths recorded decreased by 4.2% in urban areas (-1.9% for males and -6.5% for females) and by 1.7% in rural areas (-4.0% for males and +0.9% for females).
