Bucharest hosts, between 13 and 16 February, Nordic Festival, the first edition of a new multidisciplinary event which explores and celebrates the culture of the Nordic countries, in a programme of awarded films, debates with special guests, literary events, concerts and many other surprises, in consecrated cultural areas in the capital city. Under the motto "Enchanting Aurora - A Nordic Cultural Expedition", the Nordic Festival aims to connect the local environment to the lifestyle, artistic creations and recent innovations of the five participating countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden- and to facilitate dialogue and exchange of experiences between the Nordic countries and Romania. During the four days of the festival, the Bucharest public will have the opportunity to get to know and discuss with the invited artists and the international experts who will tackle themes of public interest, such as education, green transition or artificial intelligence. The section dedicated to Nordic cinematography will take place at Cinema Elvire Popesco, and the selection was made by the journalist and film critic, Ionut Mares. The selection includes two titles from each country, and the great majority of the films are for the fist time in Bucharest, in the Nordic Festival.Finland's entry for an Oscar nomination, 'In the Family' by director Tia Kouvo, will open the festival. One of the Nordic Festival's sections features a series of debates with special guests - leading personalities from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, specialists who have made a major contribution to innovative approaches in their countries in areas such as education, sustainability, ecological transition, heritage protection or artificial intelligence. In partnership with Polirom Editing House there will be debates, at Carturesti Verona Bookshop, about the literature of the fyord in Jon Kalman Stefansson’s novels and the launch of the most recent volume of the author: ’Your absence is darkness’ (Polirom Editing House, 2025) as well as about ‘misogynism as a weapon’, a discussion about the volume ‘Twice in the same river. Putin’s war against women’ by Sofi Oksanen. The debates will take place at POINT and Odeon Theatre, and the guests from the Nordic countries will be joined by Romanian experts on the same topics, who will open up the subjects to a local perspective, facilitating dialogue with the public and the exchange of experience between the Nordic countries and Romania. The initiative is organised by the Embassy of Denmark, the Embassy of Finland, the Consulate of Iceland, the Embassy of Norway and the Embassy of Sweden in Romania and will continue in March with two days of cultural events in Chisinau.
