OMV Petrom completes delivery of all modules for 20 MW green hydrogen project at Petrobrazi

July 30, 2026

OMV Petrom has announced the delivery of the fourth and final module of a 20 MW electrolyser for green hydrogen production at its Petrobrazi refinery, as the company develops a total installed capacity of 55 MW through two projects, of 20 MW and 35 MW respectively.According to a company press release, the 20 MW electrolyser will produce around 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy. The hydrogen will be used in fuel production processes, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) renewable diesel."The equipment is supplied by Neuman & Esser (Germany), while construction works, logistics, component manufacturing and module installation at Petrobrazi are being carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania in partnership with local suppliers. The 20 MW project is supported by approximately EUR 21 million in non-repayable funding under Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)," the company said. The SAF/HVO programme involves total investments of EUR 750 million, of which EUR 560 million is allocated to the construction of the SAF/HVO production unit and EUR 190 million to the two green hydrogen production facilities."With an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes, the new unit will position OMV Petrom among the largest producers of sustainable fuels in Southeast Europe. Construction, which began last year, is progressing according to schedule. The two green hydrogen projects, with a combined installed capacity of 55 MW and estimated annual output of around 8,000 tonnes, will support the production of SAF and HVO sustainable fuels derived from vegetable oils and used cooking oil. These fuels can reduce CO2 emissions by at least 65% over their life cycle and are compatible with existing infrastructure," the press release said.OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, with group-wide annual oil and gas production of around 38 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2025.The group operates in Romania and neighbouring countries through a network of approximately 780 filling stations under the OMV and Petrom brands. OMV Petrom is listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, with a free float of 28.1%.At the end of 2025, Romanian shareholders held around 45% of the company's shares, including a 20.7% stake held by the Romanian state. Romanian pension funds, together with other Romanian individuals and legal entities, owned a further 24.4%. OMV Aktiengesellschaft held 51.2% of OMV Petrom's shares, while the remaining 3.7% was owned by other foreign investors.
