Romania has allocated an extremely important percentage for defence spending, which today reached 2.45% of GDP, but we need to continue investing in order to reach 5%, Rasvan Pircalabescu, chairman of Romania's Defence Industry Employers' Organisation (OPIA), said on Monday at a conference that celebrated Romania's 22rd year of NATO membership."In 22 years, the Romanian government has allocated a significant percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for defence, which today has reached 2.45% of GDP, but in order to continue its growth, we need to invest in the defence industry to generate added value for the economy and to be able to reach the 5% percentage allocated to the defence segment," said Pircalabescu.According to him, Romania currently has over 150 certified companies in the defence industry and 85 of them are members of OPIA.He added that Romarm and the member companies of OPIA will develop new production facilities, in addition to the production of drones, to which "we have updated the software part and they are getting better and better every day.""Today we are launching the 'Unmanned ground vehicle' (UGV), that is, a remote-controlled fighting machine. We are launching it together with our partners in Romania and Germany to provide the state with what it needs. We are ready to offer the Ministry of National Defence and all the forces in Romania everything they need, but we have to be consulted and wait for a period of time before acquisitions are made."He added that OPIA has production facilities in all 85 member companies, such as "small-calibre, medium-calibre, large-calibre ammunition, drones, tanks, combat machines, 4X4s, etc. So, we cover this entire production part." OPIA brings together over 80 of the most important companies active in the defense industry in Romania, including the National Company ROMARM and its 15 subsidiaries, Lunox, TOP Metrology, Mangalia Shipyard, Compa Sibiu, Grampet Defence, the National Society of Radiocommunications, Optoelectronica and others.
