Opposition stakes on “dislodging” 30-42 ruling coalition MPs to vote in favour of no-confidence motion

November 16, 2018

National Liberal Party (PNL) Spokesman Ionel Danca stated on Thursday that the Liberals are negotiating the no-confidence motion and that 30-42 ruling coalition parliamentarians could be persuaded to support it. “Negotiations are ongoing, the leaders of Opposition parties, as you know, PNL President Ludovic Orban had a meeting with the other Opposition leaders to assess the current situation, the way this majority can be undermined. Unfortunately, the juridical situation of ALDE leader Calin Popescu Tariceanu has lowered the chances of dislodging some ruling coalition parliamentarians, in the sense that Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) parliamentarians are at this moment dependent on Liviu Dragnea, because the Social Democratic Party (PSD) holds the majority by itself in the Senate and in these conditions of course the negotiations are more difficult with the ruling coalition parliamentarians. But, based on our assessments, 30-42 ruling coalition parliamentarians who have expressed, during the talks, their opposition to Liviu Dragnea’s leadership, could be persuaded to vote in favour of a no-confidence motion,” Ionel Danca stated in Parliament on Thursday. Against the backdrop of this overture, Save Romania Union (USR) President Dan Barna stated on Wednesday, for MEDIAFAX, that he met PNL leader Ludovic Orban and PMP leader Eugen Tomac in order to discuss the strategy on tabling a no-confidence motion against the Government. Orban, Barna and Tomac met in the office of the Popular Movement Party (PMP) President. Political sources have told MEDIAFAX that the Opposition has already prepared the text of the no-confidence motion. The previous no-confidence motion against the Executive was tabled on June 20 by the PNL and backed by the USR and PMP. On June 27, the House and Senate rejected the no-confidence motion against the Government, titled ‘Dragnea-Dancila Government’s resignation, a national urgency!’. PSD-ALDE parliamentarians were present in the hall to ensure the meeting’s quorum but did not vote.
