Oradea Airport has secured funding of over 8.5 million lei for a photovoltaic park and an electricity storage system, which will help increase energy independence and reduce operating costs.According to information provided by Oradea Airport, the funding contract was signed on September 22, 2026. The non-repayable funding amounts to 5.54 million lei, covering 100% of eligible expenses, being provided through the Modernization Fund (Key Program 9: "Energy Efficiency in Transport"), with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure acting as the delegated body. The total project value is 8.53 million lei; the difference of nearly 3 million lei represents ineligible expenses and VAT, which will be covered by Oradea Airport from its own funds. The investment entails the ground-mounted installation of a photovoltaic park with a capacity of 1,999.525 kWp (approximately 2 MWp) and a storage system with a capacity of 645 kWh. Estimated average production is 2,460.14 MWh per year, against the airport's reference annual consumption of 3,247.35 MWh.The energy produced will be used exclusively for the airport's own consumption and will not be fed into the National Energy System. The storage system will allow a portion of the energy generated during the day to be stored and used later, including at night, thereby reducing the amount of energy purchased from the grid. The project also aims to reduce the environmental impact of airport operations. Estimates indicate that the investment will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 98.53 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year and primary energy savings of 787.21 MWh annually. The "Photovoltaic Park and Electricity Storage Capacities for Oradea Airport" project is scheduled to be completed and commissioned within 24 months of the financing contract being signed, and no later than December 31, 2029.
