April 1, 2025

The Romanian Parliament rejected on Friday the motion of censure initiated by 155 MPs and senators from Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), S.O.S. Romania, and the Party of Young People (POT).There were 147 votes 'in favour' and one 'against'. The Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and the national minorities group MPs did not cast their vote. The motion needed the favorable votes of the majority of MPs and senators, i.e. 233, to be adopted.According to the minutes, out of a total of 464 MPs, 358 were present and the total number of votes cast was 148. There were no canceled votes.According to the provisions of Article 113, paragraph 1 of the Romanian Constitution, the motion of censure is adopted by a majority vote of the deputies and senators, which currently represents a minimum of 233 votes.''As a result of the fact that 358 out of the total of 464 MPs were present, out of whom 147 voted for the motion of censure, it has been found that the majority of votes required by the Constitution for adoption has not been reached," announced the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Ciprian Serban.According to the Constitution, the motion of censure being rejected, the deputies and senators who signed it cannot initiate, in the same parliamentary session, a new motion of censure, unless the Government engages its responsibility according to Article 114 of the Romanian Constitution.
