PNL's Bolojan after decision to remain in opposition: PNL confirms that it is a dignified party

May 20, 2026

National leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Ilie Bolojan on Tuesday evening announced that the party's National Political Bureau (BPN) at an extended sitting has taken a decision that confirms that PNL is a dignified party that will work from the opposition to build a modernisation pole."There was a long debate, there were discussions about PNL's trajectory, about what we need to do moving forward for Romania and for the citizens of our country. And by today's decision, PNL confirms that it is a dignified party, a party that will work moving forward to build a pole of modernisation and to contribute to modern Romania, a Romania without privileges, without sinecures, to a state that creates conditions of prosperity for our citizens," Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday evening at the end of the PNL BPN meeting. The preamble of the decision shows that it was adopted considering the result of the vote in the Romanian Parliament on a no-confidence motion initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), which created, de facto, a new parliamentary majority. The first point of the decision states that the current political crisis was generated by PSD through a systematic boycott of the governing agenda, in the negotiation and adoption of which it participated directly."The reforms pledged in this agenda by all the parties that adopted it were delayed or compromised by the Social Democratic leaders. PSD is thus responsible for the worsening of the political crisis, which culminated in the initiation and voting of the motion of censure. By associating with the initiation and voting on the motion of censure, AUR shares the political responsibility, to the same extent, with the PSD. It is the duty of the parties that created the political crisis to own the consequences," reads the PNL decision. The second point of the decision refers to governance being taken over by the new majority created by PSD."PSD acted to destroy the governing coalition formed last year, and then, together with AUR, it created the parliamentary majority for the initiation and adoption of the motion of censure and the dismissal of the government. Consequently, PSD should take over the government instead of running away from responsibility, as it has done in recent months. Given that PSD has not respected its commitments, nor its coalition partners, and has acted irresponsibly in this difficult context for Romania, it is no longer a credible partner for PNL in the process of forming a new government," the decision reads. The document also specifies the position of PNL in the current political context."In this new political context, PNL maintains its decisions adopted by the statutory forums and parliamentary groups and will remain in opposition, exercising an active, responsible and constructive role, in the interest of citizens and economic stability," reads the decision adopted on Tuesday evening. The fourth point of the decision concerns PNL's commitments, which it will also support in opposition with all parliamentary means moving forward: achieving the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and passing legislation to meet the milestones; supporting the economic recovery program; Security Action for Europe (SAFE Programme; Romania's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); keeping up budgetary balances.  The no-confidence motion of censure initiated by PSD, AUR and PACE - Romania First lawmakers against the government led by Liberal Ilie Bolojan was adopted on Tuesday by Parliament with 281 votes.
