President Dan: Facing Europe's worst security crisis since WWII

December 8, 2025

We continue to face the most serious security crisis in Europe since the end of the Second World War, President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday. He conveyed a message on the occasion of the Combat Theatre Veterans Day, a moment to honour all military personnel who have taken part in missions where Romania has been, and continues to be, present alongside its allies and partners. The head of state noted that 11 November has special significance - in 1918, the First World War ended with the signing of the armistice between the Allied Powers and Germany. In Romania, the date also commemorates the moment 22 years ago when the first Romanian soldier fell in the theatre of operations in Afghanistan, posthumously Lieutenant Iosif Silviu Fogorasi."The fact that today our country is an independent and sovereign state, respected internationally and part of the wider Euro-Atlantic family, is largely due to the sacrifices - and often the ultimate sacrifice - made by Romanian soldiers over time on the battlefields of the conflicts in which Romania participated, and more recently in theatres of operations. We express our gratitude to veterans of the Second World War, as well as to all Romanian soldiers who fought with determination, devotion and heroism in the War of Independence and the First World War, for the reunification of the nation," Nicusor Dan said, according to a statement from the Presidential Administration. The president also congratulated the Invictus team for their results in Canada."We continue to face the most serious security crisis in Europe since the end of the Second World War. Romania is located in the immediate vicinity of the war of aggression carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Despite the negative effects of Russia's aggressive actions at European level, our country remains a pillar of stability on NATO's Eastern Flank, making a substantial contribution to regional and Euro-Atlantic security," Nicusor Dan emphasised.
