President Iohannis firmly condemns armed aggression of Russian Federation against Ukraine

March 22, 2022

President Klaus Iohannis condemns in the firmest terms the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine."This conduit, which comes after the illegal recognition by the Russian Federation of the 'independence' of the self-proclaimed separatist republics in Donetsk and Luhansk, component parts of Ukraine, represents a new flagrant infringement of the principles of international law, especially of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the inviolability of the borders of this state, as well as the principle of non-use of force in international relations," mentions the head of state, according to a release of the Presidential Administration.According to the quoted source, Romania, together with the entire international democratic community, determinedly rejects such an irresponsible behaviour undermining the basis of international relations and the current order in international law."Regrettably, despite the intense efforts at the European and Euro-Atlantic level to de-escalate the situation, the Russian Federation, a permanent member of the UN's Security Council, the forum guaranteeing world peace and security, has chosen the path of use of armed force, in manifest contradiction with the dispositions of the UN Charter. The Russian Federation has proven once again that it is not interested in the offer for constructive and responsible dialogue put forth by the European and Euro-Atlantic Community, but constantly and intentionally sought confrontation and imposing by force its claims, subsumed to the outdated logic of so-called spheres of influence. Romania draws attention that the Russian Federation must bear the consequences of this profoundly illegal act. In full coordination with its allies and partners within NATO and the EU, Romania will impose firm and substantial measures in response," said the head of state. In context, President Klaus Iohannis expressed full solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people faced with the aggression of the Russian Federation and reaffirmed Romania's full support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.Furthermore, the Romanian president requests the immediate, integral and unconditional cessation of Russian military aggression, the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine and the cessation of any pressure on Ukraine. On these bases, the President appeals to responsibility, to avoiding the loss of human lives and the infringement in any way of the safety of civilians. "Romania is ready to offer humanitarian aid to Ukraine. At the same time, Romania warns against any hostile actions towards the members of the Romanian community in Ukraine and is ready to grant the necessary support," shows the quoted release. At the same time, Klaus Iohannis ensures all Romanian citizens on Ukrainian territory that Romania, including through its diplomatic and consular missions, is ready to offer the necessary consular assistance."No citizen of Romania has any reason to fear. President Klaus Iohannis emphasizes that citizens of Romania, as a member-state of the North Atlantic Alliance, benefit fully from the most ample security guarantees in its history," the Presidential Administration's release mentions.
