President Iohannis in Brussels: Romania will support opening of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine, Rep of Moldova

President Klaus Iohannis will participate, from Wednesday to Friday, in Brussels, in the European Union - Western Balkans Summit and in the European Council, in which context he will support the taking of decisions regarding the opening of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, "the substantial progress made by the two states in terms of reforms should be adequately recognized by the European Union".Also, according to the Presidential Administration, Klaus Iohannis will support the granting of candidate status for Georgia, as well as the opening of accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, when the necessary progress is made to meet the accession criteria. He will also insist on accelerating the accession process of the Western Balkan states.Klaus Iohannis will reiterate Romania's firm support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans region, respecting the principles of own merits and meeting the accession criteria.As regards the review of the Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2021 - 2027, president Iohannis will plead for an approach that promotes the financing balance between the commitments already assumed and the new priorities on the European agenda and that does not involve reductions of funds for the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, the source reads.As for the discussions regarding support measures for Ukraine, in the context of the war, the president of Romania will speak for the need to adopt a comprehensive package of support.Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Klaus Iohannis will insist on the need for increased involvement of the European Union in the region in order to protect civilians, de-escalate the conflict and resume the two-state peace process solution.Moreover, regarding the future Strategic Agenda, president Iohannis will speak for the continuation of the reflection and debates with a view to the adoption, until the summer of 2024, of the future Strategic Agenda of the Union and will reiterate the need to formulate priorities for the next institutional cycle, which must reflect the strengthening of EU unity and trust between EU member states.
