President Nicusor Dan: Potential fuel supply shortage under discussion

April 20, 2026

President Nicusor Dan said that Monday's meeting at Cotroceni Presidential Palace on fuel supply addressed the possibility of a future shortage on the market, stressing that no such situation exists at present."First of all, there are two somewhat distinct issues: supply and price. In yesterday's discussion at Cotroceni, we talked about procurement and the possibility that at some point there could be a shortage of fuel on the market. We are not there yet. Romania is in a somewhat better position than other European countries because it has some domestic production and refining capacity on its territory, which shortens supply chains. As reported, there is currently no emergency. However, as with gas and electricity, work is now under way on contingency scenarios in the event of a supply disruption in petroleum products," the president said on Tuesday in Timisoara. He added that many factors remain beyond current control."Transit through the Strait of Hormuz has partially resumed. In the coming days, we will assess the extent to which this can offset the shortfall. If the situation continues along this trajectory, we are likely to see sustained price pressure over the next two to three months, and it remains to be seen to what extent the budget can provide compensation, as it has in recent days. However, much will depend on a range of evolving factors," Nicusor Dan said. The head of state visited, together with Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete, the major burns unit at the Pius Brinzeu County Emergency Clinical Hospital in Timisoara.
