President Nicusor Dan: Russia is still trying to influence Romania politically

October 28, 2025

President Nicusor Dan stated that Russia is still trying to influence Romania politically.Asked in an interview with Cotidianul, published on Tuesday, whether Russia continues to attempt to influence the Romanian society from a political point of view, the head of state replied: "Without any doubt, yes."He mentioned that he would soon present the "overall picture" regarding the annulment of last year's elections."The moment when you can actually prove that there was foreign interference may come quite a long time after the fact. Without talking about Romania, I often give the example of the UK report on Russian cyber and disinformation actions from 2016 and the report only came out in 2025. It happens that, for certain types of phenomena, you can sense where they come from, but proving it takes time," the head of state said.He mentioned that "we know that for some of the threads, whether through fake accounts or advertising agencies which paid for online publicity, which paid, we have proof that the money leads to Russia.""What we still do not know is which company coordinated, developed the entire strategy. We do not know," Nicusor Dan added.President Dan underscored that in terms of elections, Romania is currently prepared to organize any type of national election in the coming weeks."In terms of disinformation and countering fake news in real time, for instance, or biased interpretations, we are not there yet. But in a campaign setting, we would be able to handle it," Nicusor Dan said.
