President Nicusor Dan's return flight delayed by Paris weather

January 14, 2026

President Nicusor Dan touched down in Bucharest on Wednesday evening around 8:00 p.m. after the official Romanian delegation that accompanied him had been stranded at the Paris airport due to adverse weather.During the flight from Paris to Bucharest, while in Swiss airspace, the Spartan aircraft carrying the Romanian head of state was escorted by two F-18s, in a gesture of appreciation for the support provided by Romania with the international transport of the Crans-Montana fire victims."We arrived in Bucharest. During the flight, over Swiss airspace, our aircraft was escorted by two F-18s, a gesture of appreciation for the support provided with the international transport of the victims of the Crans-Montana fire," President Nicusor Dan wrote on Facebook, where he also posted several photos of the Swiss aircraft. The head of state had traveled to Paris on Tuesday morning aboard a Romanian air Force Spartan plane. On Tuesday afternoon he participated in the Coalition of the Willing summit hosted at the Elysee Palace by French President Emmanuel Macron, which was also attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The official delegation and the journalists accompanying the president had been scheduled to return to Bucharest on Tuesday evening, but disruptive weather conditions in Paris late on Tuesday and on Wednesday prevented the takeoff. The Spartan plane carrying the official delegation finally managed to depart Paris around 4:30 p.m., after two failed attempts earlier in the day due to snowfall. "Last night we decided not to leave because we would have arrived at 3-4 a.m. and that would not have been good; this is an unusual situation for France, it usually doesn't snow here. It snowed, the runway needs to be cleared, we are waiting for the runway to be cleaned," explained the president.Asked about the purchase of a presidential aircraft, the head of state said that this is out of question in 2026."At some point we must have a presidential aircraft and not only for the president, but also for ministers who are part of important delegations, because this aircraft does much more than a normal one and because we have no communications inside. When we are inside, we are isolated from what is happening in the country," explained Nicusor Dan, who currently travels on official trips with a Spartan aircraft.
