The electoral campaign for the presidential elections kicks off on Friday, with the 11 candidates registered in the race for Cotroceni being set to try to convince the Romanians to elect them to the highest office in the Romanian state until May 3.According to the Constitution (art. 81), the president of Romania is elected by universal, equal, direct, secret and freely expressed vote (item 1). The candidate who has obtained, in the first round of voting, the majority of the votes of the voters registered on the electoral lists (item 2) is declared elected. If none of the candidates has obtained this majority, a second round of voting is organized, between the first two candidates established depending on the number of votes obtained in the first round. The candidate who obtained the highest number of votes is declared elected (item 3). No person may serve as president of Romania for more than two terms. These may also be consecutive (item 4).The president of Romania represents the Romanian state and is the guarantor of the national independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country (art 80, item 1). The president of Romania ensures compliance with the Constitution and the proper functioning of public authorities. To this end, the president exercises the function of mediation between the powers of the state, as well as between the state and society (art. 80, item 2).***There are 11 candidates who received the approval from the Central Electoral Bureau to run in the May 2025 presidential election, as follows:* George Simion (AUR - Alliance for the Union of Romanians) - 38 years old (born September 21, 1986)* Crin Antonescu (Alianta Electorala Romania Inainte - Electoral Alliance Romania Forward) - 65 years old (born September 21, 1959)* Elena Lasconi (USR - Save Romania Union) - 52 years old (born April 20, 1972)* Cristian Terhes (PNCR - Romanian National Conservative Party) - 46 years old (born December 4, 1978)* Lavinia sandru (PUSL - Humanist Social Liberal Party) - 50 years old (born February 6, 1975)* Victor Ponta (independent) - 52 years old (born September 20, 1972)* Sebastian Constantin Popescu (PNR - New Romania Party) - 43 years old (b. February 12, 1982)* Silviu Predoiu - (PLAN - National Action League Party) - 66 years old (b. August 5, 1958)* John-Ion Banu-Muscel (independent) - 64 years old (b. July 8, 1960)* Daniel Funeriu (independent) - 53 years old (b. April 11, 1971)* Nicusor Dan (independent) - 55 years old (b. December 20, 1969)Five candidates - Elena Lasconi, George Simion, Cristian Terhes, Silviu Predoiu and Sebastian-Constantin Popescu - entered the electoral race in last year's presidential election too, with the USR leader managing to reach the second round alongside independent Calin Georgescu.Three candidates - Lavinia Sandru, Daniel Funeriu and Nicusor Dan - are running for the first time in this race.***The May elections take place after, on December 6 last year, the Constitutional Court annulled the presidential election on the very day that voting in the diaspora for the second round of voting, scheduled for December 8, had begun.
