Raiffeisen Bank Romania returns 13.4 mln euro to customers

January 5, 2023

Romania’s consumer protection authority, ANPC, said on Friday that the Romanian arm of Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank has reimbursed with 13.4 million euro ($14.2 million) as many as 5,530 customers affected by unfair commercial practices. The reimbursements represent an initial share out of a total of roughly 21.7 million euro owed to approximately 8,580 customers, the consumer protection authority said in a press release.   The reimbursements follow a court ruling that confirmed an ANPC order related to unfair commercial practices at Raiffeisen resulting in raised interest rates for consumer loan accounts and affecting consumer financial interests from 2006 until 2009.   The first set of reimbursements has been disbursed starting November 21, 2021, to clients with active Raiffeisen accounts in lei or the currency of the credit account for which they have been charged unfairly.   An additional 3,050 clients who do not have active Raiffeisen accounts in either lei or their loan currency are owed reimbursements of roughly 7.2 million euro. These clients are awaited at any Raiffeisen Bank branch to indicate in writing their active account numbers which can be the recipients of the reimbursements.
