Renew Europe endorses Nicusor Dan as President of Romania

May 8, 2025

Renew Europe endorses pro-European candidate Nicusor Dan, current mayor of Bucharest, in Romania’s crucial second round of presidential elections on 18 May, https://www.aldeparty.eu/ informs.     Romanians are called upon to decide whether their country will continue to advance as a strong European democracy or risk sliding backward under the weight of populism and authoritarian temptations.    “This is a moment for unity around shared European values. Renew Europe supports Nicusor Dan and its Romanian member party, USR, which threw its weight behind him in the presidential race,” Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer MEP.    Renew Europe called on the S&D Group in the European Parliament to convey the same message to their Romanian member party, PSD, the only pro-European party in Romania that did not yet officially support Nicusor Dan.    “European values are not optional, they are the very foundation of our Union, and the only candidate able to deliver on these is Nicusor Dan. An extremist candidate like George Simion poses a serious security threat not only to Romania, but to Moldova, Ukraine and the entire European Union. I call on all those who want a bright, European future for Romania to unite,” said ALDE Party and Renew Europe Vice-President Dan Barna MEP (USR, RO).
