The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela, in close coordination with its partners in the European Union. A community with Romanian roots lives in this country. The first priority for the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the safety of Romanian citizens. Romania’s diplomatic and consular missions in Latin America, as well as the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are ready to provide assistance if needed, with the support of the EU Delegation in Caracas. A consular coordination mechanism is in place for EU citizens in Venezuela. Peace in Venezuela is of the highest concern. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges restraint and responsibility on the part of the authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urges the initiation of rapid steps for return to democracy, a goal consistently expressed by Venezuelan citizens. In the spirit of the statement made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, EU member states are discussing a joint declaration before the convening of a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in Venezuela. We recall that the EU has instituted, with Romania’s agreement, successive sanctions regimes against the undemocratic regime in Caracas, including following the deeply flawed presidential elections in July 2024. The European Union and Romania have not recognized Nicolás Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela. Romania fully shares the priority of combating drug trafficking and organized crime, which represent a significant threat to the security of both continents. (Source:https://www.mae.ro/)
