Romania reports five confirmed, one probable case of West Nile virus infections

 Romania's National Public Health Institute (INSP) is reporting that between the beginning of the surveillance period of West Nile virus infections on June 3, 2024, and August 8, six cases of West Nile virus infections were recorded nationwide, of which five were confirmed and one probable.The geographical distribution of cases: Bucharest - two cases and one case each in the counties of Bistrita Nasaud, Mures, and Satu Mare. According to INSP, a case of West Nile virus infection originated in Milan, Italy, reported by the Dambovita Public Healthcare Directorate.In order to guard against such infections, the public is recommended to avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants; to use mosquito-repellent chemicals; to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house through protective window nets; to ensure the drainage of the ponds around the households; and to remove stale water containers and household garbage from the households.
