Romanian Foreign Ministry summons Russian ambassador Kuzmin

March 23, 2022

Romania's Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu has ordered the summoning of the Russian ambassador in Bucharest Valery Kuzmin to the ministry's headquarters on Thursday morning.According to a press statement released by the Foreign Ministry, the summon was made amidst ongoing Russian military aggression against Ukraine, preceded by the illegitimate recognition by Russia of the so-called separatist "republics" Donetsk and Lugansk, being in line with similar action taken by all EU member states.Top strategic affairs official Iulian Fota condemned in the strongest terms the recognition by Russia of the so-called independence of the Ukrainian separatist regions Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as Russia's unprovoked military invasion and aggression against Ukraine. He said the actions were serious violations of international law and international commitments by the Russian Federation, including the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, the Paris Charter for a New Europe, the Budapest Memorandum and the NATO-Russia Founding Act. He added that these actions will elicit a strong, coordinated and substantial response from the Euro-Atlantic community. He also reconfirmed Romania's position on the immediate and unconditional cessation of Russian military operations against Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian armed forces from all over Ukraine. He pointed out that the Russian military aggression launched on the morning of February 24 had already caused fatalities and material damage.Fota also reconfirmed the Western community's unity and solidarity when it comes to Ukraine and noted that the set of restrictive measures already taken against Russia as a result of violations of international law will be properly supplemented as a result of the latest February 24 aggression. The official also reiterated firm support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognised borders. He underscored Ukraine's right to decide sovereignly on its foreign and security policy, and reconfirmed support for the legitimate and democratically elected Ukrainian authorities.
