Senators and deputies rejected on Sunday four no-confidence motions submitted by the far-right AUR, SOS, and POT parties, following the government’s decision to assume responsibility for its second fiscal package. Petrisor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators, said that the motions were filed in response to what he called “legislative abuses and austerity measures adopted by the government without debate, consultation, or a parliamentary vote.” In an effort to reduce the budget deficit - which currently exceeds 9%, the highest in the EU - Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s government introduced a series of measures over the summer that angered various groups, including teachers, pensioners, students, and civil servants. Having survived Sunday’s four no-confidence motions, the Bolojan government now faces fresh challenges: protests from teachers and resistance from magistrates over planned changes to retirement conditions, with the Constitutional Court expected to rule on the matter later this month.
