Internet users in Romania are targeted by a pig butchering scam campaign that can cause devastating damage to victims, warns the team of the National Cyber Security Dispatch, recommending increased vigilance in online interactions."What is pig butchering? A type of scam in which attackers gradually gain the trust of victims, over long periods of time, under the guise of looking for friends. Subsequently, they will convince the victims to deposit money with fake investment platforms. Since the platforms are controlled by the attackers, they can simulate significant winnings that encourage the victim to deposit even more funds. In the end, the attackers steal all the deposited funds, usually very large amounts," DNSC experts explain. As protection against pig butchering, they recommend: be careful; read messages from strangers carefully and do not act impulsively; do not access links in text messages from unknown sources and completely avoid interacting with platforms recommended by attackers; contact the bank immediately if you have deposited funds with the platform controlled by the attackers and cannot withdraw them; report the incident to the authorities on the PNRISC platform (https://pnrisc.dnsc.ro/) or to the emergency number 1911.
